UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-ROLLA GOALS FOR ENGLISH 20: EXPOSITION AND ARGUMENTATION

English 20 (Exposition and Argumentation) has two main goals: (1) to develop the students' competency in writing and (2) to develop their abilities to read and analyze various kinds of prose written in English.

Students who successfully complete English 20 should be capable of writing an essay which contains an identifiable thesis, intelligently and coherently developed with sufficient details to make its premise reasonably convincing. The essay should contain a functional introduction and conclusion and demonstrate the students' ability to construct and edit well-developed paragraphs and sentences.

The students should also be able to demonstrate their abilities to read and analyze coherently various types of English prose, which might include both published prose and student essays.

All students in English 20 are expected to be introduced to the uses of the university library.

All students are expected to perform a variety of writing exercises (a minimum of six). In addition to the essay, these written pieces might include book reviews, informative abstracts, letters of application, resumes, descriptions. All students should write at least one longer paper of at least 1200 words. Students who successfully complete English 20 should write at least 5000 words of graded material.

Goals Statement - English 60: Writing and Research

English 60 (Writing and Research has three main goals: (1) to improve the students' competency in the techniques of research writing, (2) to improve their abilities to read and analyze various kinds of primary and secondary research materials, and (3) to require them to write research papers of a quality that suffices in school and the work place.

Students who successfully complete English 60 will be capable of writing research papers which contain an identifiable thesis that is intelligently and coherently developed with sufficient supporting details based on the use of sources.

The students will also be able to demonstrate their abilities to locate, select, and analyze source materials. These materials may include assigned readings and independent research in libraries and elsewhere. All students in English 60 are expected to know how to use the Curtis Laws Wilson University Library as a source of reference information.

All students are expected to demonstrate their abilities to integrate research information into research writing involving the accurate and consistent use of a standard system of documentation which includes notes and bibliographies. Students also learn to avoid plagiarism in their presentation of materials and sources.

All students are expected to perform a variety of writing exercises (a minimum of six). In addition to a major emphasis on research, these written pieces may include book and article reviews, abstracts, summaries, position papers, and bibliographic annotations. All students should write at least one longer paper of at least 2500 words (i.e. ten pages double-spaced, font the size of one used in this document, and normal margins). Students who successfully complete English 60 should write at least 6000 words of graded materials.
