CCCC 1997: Outcomes Forum (Session L.17)

Session Results: Synthesis (Mark Wiley)

I have synthesized all of the outcomes posted (and considered a few other program descriptions I have collected from other universities). What I did was to simplify the material we have from the 4Cs panel by organizing it into four primary outcomes. I then deleted what seemed to me redundancies and left out very specific outcomes that seemed to be included naturally under one of these primary outcomes.

1. Rhetorical Knowledge -- students develop a repertoire of organizational strategies and dicourse schemes, especially argumentative strategies and schemes.

2. Genre Knowledge -- students develop knowledge of appropriate genre conventions, both local and global.

3. Writing-Reading Connections -- Students learn to use writing and reading as tools for learning, thinking, and communicating.

4. Processes -- Students conduct inquiry through various writing processes (this also includes revising, editing, and collaborating).
