This piece was presented as an invited address at the third Second-Language Writing Conference, Purdue University, 12 October 2002. It was published in Paul Kei Matsuda and Tony Silva (Eds.), Second Language Writing Research: Perspectives on the Process of Knowledge Construction (Erlbaum, 2005), pp. 105-120. The version here adds Table 8.5, inadvertently omitted from the published piece, and corrects several references to other tables in the text.
